Etymology: Baynes Mountains in Namibia - type location.
Distribution: NW Namibia - Baynes Mountains.

Number of species: 1 (Bruyns 2000).
History: Plant was discovered by Peter Bruyns in December 1999 in Baynes Mountains in northwestern-most corner of Namibia. The new discovery did not fit comfortably into any of known genera, so Bruyns placed it in a new genus Baynesia in (2000). Its closest relationships appear to with Caralluma and Anomalluma.
