History: In 1990 Dr. Leonard Newton, Professor of Botany at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, together with Maurizio Dioli and Gifred Powys found a Huernia species at the mountain Jibisa in Marsabit, Northern Kenya. Next day they found another plant at Sul Sul Mude. Darrel Plowes described it as new species in (1995) and named it after its discoverer.
